BOH has trained more than 800 people in Home-Based Care within the community. The main objective of this program is to equip community members with knowledge, skills on HIV/AIDS management at home. The aim is to reduce stigma, discrimination and to provide a wider access to care, love and support, for people living with HIV/AIDS. The home based care skills have given the community members the courage and know how to meet the needs of the people living with HIV AIDS in the community. Home-based care programe links with the commnity health workers who then are able to continue care and support of the person living with HIV/AIDS together with the clinical team from the Beacon health care centre.
Before the women are enrolled into Beacon of Hope’s vocational training programme, they are required to undergo a 3-6 months of training in home-based care. Professionals who work both inside and outside the centre facilitate this training. The trainees master every aspect of home-based care including nutrition, self care, the mental and physical changes that a HIV patient goes through and how to address the spiritual needs of an HIV/AIDS positive patient. Our facilitators regularly attend workshops and advanced training sessions to ensure their home-based care skills are up to date. They, in turn utilise the additional knowledge to enhance the skills of the community members, so they too can be up to date on the procedures and methods used to care for a person who is infected.
BOH in return expects all of the women to use their skills to help their community. Each woman is required to care for HIV patients whom they visit in their own time and use the home-based care skills and other resources provided by BOH.
