AIDS Facts

29 million adults and children are estimated to be living with HIV or AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa in the year 2002.

Approximately 5 million new infections occurred in 2002, while HIV and AIDS claimed 3.1 million lives in 2002.

2.3 million adults aged between 15 and 49 were estimated to be living with AIDS in Kenya, 1.4 million of which were women in 2002.

There are an estimated 1.2 million AIDS orphans in Kenya, currently.

Beacon Of Hope is a Non-Governmental Organization formed to address the problem of HIV/AIDS pandemic among women in poor communities.

Our Mission Statement:

"To bring hope to women living with and affected by HIV/AIDS within poor communities by empowering them and meeting their physical, emotional, spiritual and economic needs."

Our Objectives are:

  • To assist women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in poverty reduction through sustainable income generating activities.

  • To provide seed capital, training and appropriate business skills to women affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.

  • To provide counselling services, support groups, and pastoral care to such women.

  • To assist orphans and children of infected and affected parents with eduction, health servives, conducting HIV/AIDS prevention among vulnerable children, mobilising the community to respond to children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

  • To provide short-term food relief to those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.

  • To strengthen such women's accessibility to available resources through networking with other bodies and agencies dealing with HIV/AIDS.

  • To influence changes in the legal, cultural and economic structures and practices that lead to discrimination of women infected with HIV/AIDS.

  • To assist in establishment of home based care programs within the community where it does not exist, by way of partnerships with organisations that are involved in that capacity.

The term "women" as used, includes the following groups of people:

  • Women infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.

  • Women who may be negative but whose spouses are suffering from HIV/AIDS or have died of it.

  • Women caring for HIV/AIDS patients.
